Natalie Merchant ~ What’s the Matter Here

I totally forgot to do a ‘music Monday’ last week, but no one seemed to mind.  It’s the getting back into the swing of work, worrying about my dog, all of that, I guess.  Anyway, I’ve always liked this song, originally performed by 10,000 Maniacs, but here by Natalie Merchant, their lyricist and vocalist.

The only version I could find that I could embed was this live version with just Merchant. If you want to see the original video, you can find it here: 10,000 Maniacs – What’s The Matter Here.

You know I haven’t thought about 10,000 Maniacs nor Natalie Merchant in so long. I use to listen to them all the time.

A friend of mine had a weird knee-jerk reaction to this song back when it came out. I said, “It’s just a song — granted it’s about child abuse — but really, you need to chill.” Turns out he got in a huge argument with an ex-girlfriend about the tune, but it’s wasn’t so much the song that made him mad. Rather, it was the memory of the argument with his ex. Strange that the song brings back that memory for me … but there ’tis!

Ohhhh, I’d forgotten of my love for her and 10,000 maniacs… I’ve got a couple of CD’s buried that I should dust off!

Thanks for the reminder of her beautiful voice…
