Jewel ~ You Were Meant For Me

Maya and Jewel

I have a soft spot for this song.  I had kind of forgotten it, but a few weeks ago it came on while I was driving around, and it brought back memories of when Maya was a toddler, and a HUGE Jewel fan.  She especially loved this song, though Foolish Games came in as a close second. Look closely at the picture above, and you’ll see that she’s holding a printout of the cover to Jewel’s Pieces of You album.  She would carry it around with her, sleep with it, everything with it.  One copy would get torn or wet or lost, and Ted would print out another one.  We got her to relax and enjoy the fireworks by pointing out that some of them were streaming down and looked like Jewel’s hair.  We went to a concert, and she thought that Kenny Wayne Shepherd was Jewel, because of his long blond hair.  To her, women could have two types of hair.  Jewel hair, which was long and preferably blonde, or Carefully hair, which was short, and reminded her of her other favorite singer, Sarah McLachlan (there’s a phrase in Building a Mystery when Sarah says, “Holding on so carefully…” which is where the carefully hair comes from).  Actually, she sometimes had a printout of Jewel in one hand, and Sarah in the other.  Ted’s aunt would take her to Target, and she would go visit the CD, and Maya would hold it throughout the store, and then say goodbye and leave it there until next time.  Good times.

Anyway, from the time Maya was 1 until she was about 3, Jewel could do no wrong, and Maya loved to play You Were Meant for Me on her little toy piano, and sing along.  She used to also emote really well to Foolish Games.  So as you may have noticed, the song brings back a lot of smooshy memories of when Maya was a toddler. Wish I could go back for an hour or two sometimes…

Enjoy.

That’s my sister’s fav song too. I performed that song for her when she was in Hong Kong. It’s a very sweet song. My sis nicknamed it the “breakfast song”, with the eggs and yolks and all. lol

Lately, every time I see a boy toddler I get this huge ache in my gut. Saturday at a party it happened and I almost started crying. It’s not that I want another baby. I just want a few minutes with the ones I had.

CK, yeah, it should be called the ‘breakfast song’. 🙂

AL, I’m with you. I get that pain whenever I see a baldish baby girl. And yeah, it’s not for another baby, it’s for the one I had. Well said.

I LOVE this post! Gosh! How cute is Maya!?!?! Adorable!!

That was one of my fave songs too. I LOVED Jewel! I also LOVED (I still LOVE) Sarah. I’ve seen her in concert and have been to the Lillith Fair just to hear her perform on stage. I LOVE her. Hmmmm…That Maya has excellent taste! 😉

If Jewel only knew how popular she was with the toddler set back in the day! 🙂

And remember how Maya thought Jewel was Taylor Hanson, too?

  • C

Tee hee! Jewel = Taylor Hanson! That Maya is too cute! BTW, I’ve got that song in my head now. It’s been stuck in my head since I read this post yesterday! 😉

Chrissy, it’s even funnier if you know the whole story…there was a specific picture of the Hanson brothers on a box of Eggo waffles that Maya LOVED. That’s the one she thought was Jewel. HA!

Oh, how cute! I miss the toddler days! Max had a huge crush on Ariel the Mermaid. He used to take the picture book to bed. Matt was pretty pleased that he picked the princess in the shell bra.

HAHA! That is too funny! *sigh* As I read your posts about Maya and the toddler days, there’s a wistful feeling and it makes me feel all choked up. Why? Because I have a feeling that years from now, I will be looking back, remembering, and loving these special babyhood times. Little One is already/only 7 months old. That’s close to being a year old. Now I know what everyone meant when they said “Enjoy them. They grow too fast”.

Excuse me while I get all weepy. LOL!

    Darn
I hate to admit it…..but I’m an “in the closet” Jewel fan!
    OK..OK….I’ll admit it….I like Jewel!
    There goes my machismo?
Yes, I’ve got the “Pieces of You” CD!
Oh, the shame of it all!
