Friday Already?

Hard to believe it’s Friday already.  This week sure sped by, didn’t it?   So.

  1. Grandma’s feeling a bit better, though not at all happy about going into assisted living, no matter how temporarily.  The silver lining to this whole thing is that she realizes that this might involve some money on her part, and so is cutting off my blood-sucking vampire of a cousin, who has been milking her and my Great Aunt dry for years.  Lining your pockets at the expense of old women on a severely limited income is tantamount to elder abuse in some circles, so this cutting off is very much welcomed by our entire family.  Except the vampire, of course.
  2. In case you missed Ted’s comment on my last post, Grandma woke up from her surgery full of piss and vinegar, as someone used to say.  If you knew my Grandma, you’d know that she’s the sweetest woman ever.  So sweet and kind, that Ted and Maya have a fictitious character called “Evil Grandma”, who says mean things, things Grandma would NEVER say, like, “Oh Julie honey, you always were an idiot, I never liked you”, things like that.  Well, I guess Evil Grandma woke up from the anesthesia, and her first words were to the nurse.  She said, “Come over here so I can slap you!  You’re so stupid and ugly!”  ACK!  Too funny.
  3. I went to a focus group last night, which was lawyers for a big company fishing to find out what a prospective jury might think of their case.  I think they were trying to decide whether to settle out of court or not.  My final answer?  They did the man wrong, but it might be hard to argue that they should pay all that he wants. I think they should settle for less, but yes, pay him.  For attending this focus group, I was given a sandwich, little bag of chips, a drink, and a crisp $100 bill.  If you think that comes in handy while unemployed, I’ll agree with you.
  4. Penne with turkey sausage on the menu for tonight, but I’m not sure what recipe I will use.  Gotta scrounge through the cookbooks.  I’m pretty sure I don’t want a baked version.
  5. Maya’s been on Spring Break this week.  It’s been nice not having to get up and get her out the door early every day.  Not that I slept in much, but it’s nice to not rush, you know?  We went to see “Knowing” on Monday, which I liked.  That was before we got the news of Grandma (actually, the news came in during the movie, but I silenced my phone, so I didn’t get the message until after), and spent the rest of Monday in the ER in Stockton.  Maya was VERY patient, and I was very thankful for that.
  6. No news on the job search front.  I’ll confess that I haven’t looked much this week.  The whole Grandma thing kind of took it out of me a bit, but I’m thinking I can jump back in today, see if there are any new job postings worth going after, that sort of thing.
  7. MC Hammer came by the radio station where Ted works yesterday.  I took Maya down there so she could meet him, and also so I would be free to go to the focus group thing.  They said he was really nice, and his brother was even nicer.  Cool, huh?

I hope you’re well.  If the penne turns out well, I’ll post a recipe. 😉  Happy Friday!

I’m very happy to here Grandma has cut off the vampire. I think everyone here is cheering. I’m thinking Grandma is pretty spunky and will be back in her house in no time. I know it won’t feel like no time to her 😉 We saw Knowing last weekend and we liked it too. Still want to see I Love You Man though. How did you hear about this focus group?? That was interesting and a G spot? Nice!

I’ve heard MC Hammer is pretty cool. Any pics?

Have a great weekend J. xoxo

I’m a fan of just browning up the sausage with a clove or two of fresh garlic, adding a brick of thawed and well-drained frozen spinach, sauteeing for a minute or two, then tossing in the cooked penne. Throw in a handful or two of fresh grated parmesan and some black pepper, drizzle a bit of very good extra virgin olive oil and call it done.

(I’d add way more garlic, but Rick is such a snot about garlic…!)

I hope your grandmother will mend quickly and be able to get home. I just love how you are always alert to the good things in life, even amid the inevitable downturns. I always click on my bookmark for your blog with a little feeling of anticipation, always rewarded, that I’ll find something beautiful or funny or cheerful or positive, or, when things are really hard, something very real and human that is easy to relate to.

Your Grandma sounds hilarious… hope she does get better quickly, what a feisty one she is! An that is cool that Maya met MC Hammer- he seems like he’d be nice.
Good luck on the job hunt… I don’t blame you for slowing down a bit with the situation with Grandma.
